Truth Addressed

In our society the word “truth” has taken on a political viewpoint. When I was in school, and had a test that was T or F, for true or false, there was only one answer. If I told my teacher that it was my truth even if it wasn’t hers or his, it didn’t really matter to the teacher what I thought.

Truth used to be defined as “an established or verified fact, principle, etc.”. Now we hear that there is no absolute truth, which is an oxymoron. If one believes there is no absolute truth, is not that stating an absolute truth?

I was also looking at the definition “post” and see, “after in time, later, following”. So, when I saw that the Oxford Dictionary had added a new word, “post-truth”, as the word of the year, I was surprised with the definition. I assumed it meant we live in an era where there is no truth anymore. If everyone has their own truth then how can you have a T or F test? It doesn’t work. But, that is not what Oxford stated.

One thing for sure, we do live in a post-truth society when Jesus is not accepted as the Truth. Whether we believe something is true or not, does not make our truth correct. Just ask my teacher after she graded my test.
